We look forward to seeing you! Dr. Kelly Catino A Nebraska native, Dr. Kelly Catino received her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. After graduation from Southern College of Optometry in 2002, she joined Doctors Vision Center in Wilmington, NC. Dr. Catino is a member of the American Optometric Association, the North Carolina State Optometric Society, and the Southeastern District Optometric Society. Her community involvements include The Junior League of Wilmington and the Good Samaritan House, while also enjoying playing in the local USTA tennis league. Dr. Catino and her husband, Dr. Gil Catino, reside with their two children in Wilmington. Dr. Gil Catino Dr. Gil Catino is originally from Beckley, West Virginia and grew up in Charlotte, NC. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and went on to receive his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tennessee in 2002. Dr. Catino is involved with the American Optometric Association, the AOA Political Action Committee, the North Carolina State Optometric Society, and the Southeastern District Optometric Society. Sunglasses

While we may think about the importance of sunscreen for protecting our skin, too often we forget about protecting something even more important...our eyes. 80% of UV damage occurs before 18 years of age. This means wearing sunglasses is not just important for adults, but for children as well. We encourage you to read our Sunglasses Guide and hope you'll make an appointment with one of our Wilmington, NC optometrists today! What should I look for in a pair of sunglasses? The most important aspect of a pair of sunglasses is the lens itself. The lens should provide 99-100% UV protection (including UV-A and UV-B light). The lens material of choice with sunglasses (as with most eyeglasses) is polycarbonate or trivex. This is one of the thinnest and lightest lenses on the market and even more importantly for sunglasses is that it's shatter resistant. Because many of us will be using sunglasses while playing various sports and doing fun outdoor activities, these lenses need to be safe. Now just because a pair of sunglasses is expensive, does not necessarily mean that they are good. Something else to keep in mind when picking out your next pair of sunglasses is that darker lenses does not mean they are better. The color of the lens can be based on your preference and activity requirements. Why should I wear sunglasses? As stated previously: 80% of UV damage/exposure most likely occurs before the age of 18. Since active children are likely to spend a lot of time outdoors, it's extremely important that we protect their eyes from the sun. Just like UV exposure can cause sunburns and skin cancer, UV damage can cause short-term and long-term damage to the eyes as well. Short-term damage is called photokeratitis. This is like a sunburn to the eyes that will cause irritation, tearing and light sensitivity. Long-term damage can include both cataracts and macular degeneration. Because we are unsure as to what level of exposure this type of damage will occur, the AOA (American Optometric Association) recommends that everyone, this includes adults and children, have a quality pair of sunglasses that provide UV protection. Wearing a brimmed hat when possible will also provide protection. Keep in mind that UV rays are reflected from the sand, water, snow and even concrete, so sun damage doesn't just happen from looking in the sun. What about polarization? Polarized sunglasses are a great option for anyone looking to have clearer vision while eliminating glare. Not only are they beneficial for fisherman who want to reduce glare on the water (and actually be able to see the fish!!), but they will help with anyone looking for clearer, more comfortable vision. When driving polarized lenses will even reduce the glare off the road and even the windshield and the hood of the car. This means less visual distractions for better concentration on the road and the people around you. There are many available options and combinations for the person looking for that new pair of sunglasses. There is even a polarized photochromic option available now from Transitions. Photochromic lenses change from light inside to dark outside, which are a great option for anyone who is frequently going in and out of the sun throughout the day. Dry Eyes

What is Dry Eye Syndrome? Dry Eye Syndrome is a condition in which the eye do not produce a sufficient amount or proper consistency of tears to maintain a healthy norished surface. Patients who suffer from dry eye experience discomfort and blurred vision. Some of the common complaints are dry scratchy eyes, a forgein body sensation, burning, and excessive tearing. Dry Eye syndrome is one of the most common eye conditions that we treat on a day to day basis. Many factors can contribute to dry eye such as the environment, age, medications, and contact lens wear. How can Dry Eyes be diagnosed? [caption id="attachment_100" align="alignright" width="180" caption="A Healthy Cornea"][/caption] Dry eye syndrome can be diagnosed with a full comprehensive eye exam. During this exam we pay special attention to the patient history looking for contributing factors. The tear film is evaluated to determine the amount of tears produced by the eyes, and the quality of the tears. Tears are produced by several glands around the eyelids, these glands are evaluated to make sure they are working properly. Special dyes are used to evaluate the amount of tears in the eye and to check the corneal surface for damage. When the front surface of the eye is effected by Dry Eye this can impair vision and increase the risk of infection. Once this information is obtained we can determine if the patient has Dry Eye Syndrome, and customize a treatment plan. We provide our patients diagnosed with Dry Eye Syndrome with the latest treatments available to treat this chronic condition. Mild dry eyes can be treated with specific over the counter drops. We have experienced great success with some of the newer formulas currently available. When simple over the counter drops do not work, we often prescribe RESTASIS® Ophthalmic Emulsion. This is the first and only medication currently available for the treatment of Dry Eye. This medication slowly decreases inflammation in and around the eye, stimulating the eye to produce more tears. Newer treatment modalities have concentrated on Omega 3 and flax seed supplements to help with the oil layer of the tear film. When used correctly, we have had good success with these supplements. Cataracts

The lens begins to loose flexibility in our 40s, causing our near vision to become out of focus. We start using reading glasses or progressives to compensate for this change. Later on down the road our lens begins to loose it’s transparency. A healthy clear lens allows light to pass freely providing a crisp clear image on the retina. Over time the lens becomes more opaque and cloudy blocking light and distorting vision. When this process occurs we then call it a cataract. Cataracts blurr vision, decrease night vision causing glare and halos, fade colors, and increase sensitivity to light. All of your preoperative and postoperative care is done here at our office. The surgery is done at an outpatient facility with the surgeon. Macular Degeneration

Here you can see the blood and hemorrhaging on the retina due to ARMD."][/caption] Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is a leading cause of severe vision loss in the United States. Caucasians are at a higher risk of developing ARMD than other races. Females are more likely to develop the disease than males. ARMD affects the central retina called the macula. This area becomes damaged and central vision loss follow. There are two forms of ARMD the dry form and the wet form. In the dry form of ARMD, the central retina is damaged slowly over time. In the more aggressive wet form of ARMD, new blood vessels develop under the macula leading to hemorrhaging and vision loss. Many factors can increase your risk of ARDM. Studies show a high correlation of ARMD with smoking, UV light (sunlight) exposure, and poor diets high in saturated fat. The eye exams at Doctors Vision Center Porters Neck include the use of the newest technology available to detect ARMD early in the disease process. We then use the latest scientific based studies to recommend treatments to prevent the progression of the disease. We are one of the first optometrists in the Wilmington, NC area to provide DNA based testing to determine a patients risk of progression into the wet form of ARMD. With a simple cheek swab DNA can be harvested and sent to the lab for risk analysis. This allows us to determine patients most at risk for wet ARMD, and customize an appropriate monitoring schedule for the disease. Studies show that diets low in saturated fat and dark leafy vegetables can slow the progression of the disease. Fruits and vegetables contain Carotenoids, which is a chemical that give them their red, orange, and yellow colors. Lutein and zeaxanthin are examples of these carotenoids which are also found in high concentrations in the macula. Studies show that eating these fruits and vegetables, or supplementing with these carotenoids may slow the progression of the disease. Newer studies are showing promise of Omega 3 (fish oil) helping with slowing of the disease. We do know that nutrition and the eye have a strong correlation, and at Doctors Vision Center Porters Neck, we will stay on top of the latest research to provide our patients with the best and latest information possible.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the third most common cause of blindness in the Unite States. Glaucoma is a disease that slowly damages the optic nerve over time leading to tunnel vision, and eventually blindness. There are no signs of glaucoma until the advanced stages, in which severe damage has already occurred. That's why early detection is key, and Wilmington, NC optometrists Drs. Kids with Reading Disability Misdiagnosed with ADHD

A study in the Journal Psychology showed that less than 60% of children tested for a reading disability and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were found to have the correct diagnosis. The study showed that it was very difficult to determine if a reading disorder was the cause of ADHD or ADHD was the cause of the reading disorder. This is one of the reasons why we recommend a full comprehensive eye exam on all children before the start of school. Many reading and comprehension problems can be misdiagnosed as a result of poor vision or eyes not working together properly. Omega-3 and Diet Leads to Good Eye Health Omega-3 is considered an essential fatty acid. Essential fatty acids are not produced by our body naturally and are found by outside food sources. One of the most common sources of Omega-3 is found in oily fish. It can also be found in higher concentrations in flax seed, walnuts, beans, olive oil and winter squash. Omega-3 provides many benefits to the body and the eyes. Research shows Omega-3 fatty acids can help lower the risk of chronic disease such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. It is great for heart health and controlling triglycerides in the body. For this reason the American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least 2 times per week. Omega-3 fatty acids naturally reduce inflammation in the body and Omega-6 fatty acids increase inflammation in the body. Omega-6 is found in high concentrations in mayonnaise and vegetable cooking oil. You must maintain a good balance between the two fatty acids in your diet. Diets very low in Omega-6 and High in Omega-3 contain whole grains, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fish, olive oil, and garlic. Studies show that people who maintain this type diet have a much lower percentage of heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to be very beneficial to the eyes. Several studies have shown that people who have diets high in Omega-3 and low in Omega-6 are less likely to have Macular Degeneration (ARMD). This may be attributed to the lowering affect of inflammation from Omega-3 fatty acids. The Blue Mountain study in Australia looked at 3654 patients which were 49 and older. It was found that patients who consumed fish at least 1 time per week had a 40% reduction in ARMD. We currently recommend to all of our patients with macular drusen or ARMD a daily multivitamin and Omega-3 supplement. Currently the Age Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) is studying the benefits of Omega-3 and ARMD. The study started in 2008 and will follow 4000 patients for a 5-6 year period. In the study participants are divided into a group taking 1 gram of Omega-3 per day and a group not taking the supplement. This will be the first formal study published showing the results of Omega-3 supplementation. We believe there is enough scientific evidence to recommend Omega-3 on a daily basis in the form of supplements or diet. Summertime Eye Protection

Summer is here and it is a very important time to keep your eyes protected from the sun! We don't think about the eyelids very much, but protecting them from UV damage with sunglasses is just as important as protecting our skin with sunscreen. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common human malignancy and 90% of these lesions occur on the head and neck. 10% of all Basal cell carcinomas occur on the eyelids. The most common site of these tumors are on the lower eyelid. These tumors tend to be slow growing and locally invasive, but non-metastasizing. Early Basal cell carcinomas start out as a shiny, firm, pearly nodule with small dilated blood vessels on its surface. As the tumor grows the lesion will develop a central area of ulceration. So remember if you have any lumps or bumps in or around your eyelids, have them checked out by your eye care professional and our Wilmington eye care center is prepared to attend to any eye care concern you may have. Know "Pink Eye" When You "See" It

If you're unfamiliar with "Pink Eye" and wonder if you or your child might have it, Wilmington, NC eye doctor Dr. Gil Catino can clear it up for you - literally! "I'm sure many of you have heard the term "Pink Eye" used when the eye suddenly turns red and is typically accompanied by tearing or discharge. This term seems to be used most often in younger school aged patients when they have a red eye. Often times, the student is sent home by the school for a red eye and the parent will then bring them to their eye doctor for treatment. "Pink Eye" is a general term for conjunctivitis and is one of the more common reasons patients present to their optometrist. Conjunctivitis is most often caused by a virus, but can also be from bacterial, inflammatory, and allergic responses. While the presentation may be similar, the treatment will vary, depending on the cause. Bottom line: If your eye is not white and comfortable, see your eye doctor for treatment."

Contact Lens Wearers Should be Aware of GPC Symptoms

Are you having a difficult time getting a full day of wear out of your contacts? Are you suffering from dry itchy eyes? If so, you may be suffering from a common condition called Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis or GPC. GPC can occur months to even years after beginning contact lens wear. GPC is a condition which causes small bumps to develop under the upper eyelid from the constant rubbing of the lid across the contact lens. When this develops the eyes begin to itch, feel dry, and have a forgein body sensation when the contacts are removed. GPC can lead to increased mucus production, photophobia, blurred vision, and contact lens intolerance. When we diagnose a patient with GPC they are placed on a mild steroid drop for about 2 weeks to decrease the inflammation under the lids. Patients are usually out of their contacts for the first week and slowly back into their lenses by week 2. Once GPC is properly treated patients are back to wearing their contacts symptom free all day long. The new digital age of smartphones, 3-D video games, iPads, and laptops can really put a significant strain on the eyes. We spend the majority of our day using these devices and using our eyes at these close intermediate distances. But the question asked by many patients, Are these electronics dangerous to your eyes? At this time there are no medical studies showing permanent or long term visual damage from using computers or electronics. Many patients do experience eye strain, fatigue, and headaches especially towards the end of the day. In order to keep something in focus at a close range, the eye must use a muscle and this muscle does get tired. We advise patients to take breaks as much as possible throughout the day. This gives the muscles inside the eye time to relax and adjust the focus to a different distance. For patients that are experiencing any of these symptoms we do recommend and prescribe computer or near glasses. These glasses are specially designed to keep the eyes relaxed while using computers or other digital devices for long periods of time.
